When should I seek pregnancy care?

What makes a pregnancy high-risk?

A high-risk pregnancy describes any pregnancy that puts a mother or her baby at special risk for health problems before, during, or after delivery.

A common factor for high-risk pregnancies is age. Mothers who are 35 or older and those who are younger than 20 might be at increased risk for pregnancy complications.

Other factors that can make a pregnancy high-risk include:

• Twins and other multiple babies
• History of pregnancy complications
• Previous miscarriages or stillbirths
• Chronic health issues in the mother such as high blood pressure or diabetes
• Alcohol or drug use
